Some Milestones...Maddex finally got the motivation to roll from his belly to his back on December 9th. I'm pretty sure I have already blogged about that. He began rolling from his back to his belly on December 23rd. We knew he was capable of this for quite some time, but I guess he never had the motivation. What motivation? Mommy wrapping Christmas presents. He went from one roll to rolling across the living in 20 minutes. No lie! As long as I had wrapping paper in his sight he would get to it. Shortly after he figured out how to roll as a mode of transportation he realized he could rotate on his belly to get closer to his toys or get the right angle to roll to a different place. He is showing signs of wanting to crawl, but I am not pushing it. He gets most of his body up (which is a feat in itself since he is 20 pounds and most of that weight is in his head and shoulders!!
He also has been sitting unassisted for some time. Probably since around 4 months, but I am not sure when to make it official. He still forgets and falls back (mostly when he has a toy in his mouth and wants to eat it) or he just throws himself back or lunges forward. He is (and has been) capable of sitting up on his own for several minutes. He is so cute too. He has impeccable posture!!
I also swear he says three words now. Other people my beg to differ. But during my Christmas vacation when he was sick (more on that in the next paragraph) we spent A LOT of time together. Whenever I was out of sight he would whine "Mum mumma, mum, mumma." I thought all along he was calling for me so I would run to him. Eventually it caught on and whenever he wants me he says it. Even our daycare provider imitates his Mum Mumma cry. He also says Dadadada when he is playing. I think it is his way of saying Daddy is the fun parent and Mommy is the cuddly one. His newest word is "Gitty Gitty" which he started saying this week (Jan 22 to be exact). Right away I knew he was calling the cat, but Kiel didn't believe me. The next morning, however, Kiel had him in the swing and Pesky jumped on the couch next to him and he started saying it again. Then he was playing with his moose pillow pet, petting it and saying "gitty gitty gitty gitty." The fact that he uses two out of three words in context makes me think he gets it. Others may think I'm crazy.
He got his first sickness 10 days after starting daycare. I think that is a good accomplishment. I hear of many kids getting sick within the first few days. Maddex came down with a pretty nasty (for him) cold. It could have been a whole lot worse. It was a pain to deal with since he was so congested and he couldn't figure out how to breathe out of his mouth. We dealt with major breathing issues for about a week, and then the cold moved down to his chest where it remains. On Friday Jan 25 I took him to the doctor since he had the cough for almost a full month. The doctor couldn't figure out what was up, but to rule everything out he ordered a chest X-ray. It was not fun for me or Maddex! They put him in this plastic tube contraption that held him upright with his arms glued to his ears over his head. It looked like a torture device from medieval times. Not fun! Everything came out clear too. So the doctor thinks his cough may be reflux related so now he is on baby Zantac twice a day. Who knows if this will help.
He still doesn't sleep! He still wakes up about 4-5 times a night. And can't fall back to sleep on his own. Luckily he usually falls back to sleep within a minute (if he doesn't have to eat) and 5 minutes if he does eat. He only sleeps from about 8:30-5:30 and then takes about 2 hours worth of naps during the day. He is just not a sleeper!
We did try putting him in his crib during the Christmas break, but he was sick and miserable and the fact that he couldn't breathe really didn't make for the best transition time. So we shall try again in February. My friend is banking on using my co-sleeeper for her baby that is coming in May so our time is limited. And he is almost too big for the thing anyway!
Over the past week he began trying to pull himself up. He still hasn't done it, but if we stand him near the tub, or couch he holds himself up. I am so not ready for a walking baby! My mom warned me that my sister started walking at 8 months. I am praying he takes after me and doesn't walk until well after his first birthday!
I almost forgot to mention that my mom and sister planned a surprise Half Birthday for Maddex on New Year's Day (his actual 6 month birthday). It was so cute. My mom cut birthday banners in half to decorate, my sister got a bunch of balloons, my mom got a cute 1/2 onesie, and an awesome cake. I'll post pictures of it soon!
- The Weekly List -
24-30 Weeks Old/6 Months
Total weight gain/loss:
Maddex: He has hovered at the 19 pound mark for a while. In his photos you will see that he is at 19.5 for a while. When he went for his 6th month check up on Jan 3 he was actually only 18 pounds 11 ounces, and at his cough appointment on Jan 25 he was 19 pounds 6 ounces. His length at his 6th month check up was 27 inches. He was in the 76 percentile for weight and 72 percentile for height and his head is literally above the curve.
Sleep: At this point we are assuming sleep will be an issue for us indefinitely. He just doesn't need sleep like other kids his age.
Best moment this week: We have had so many great moments I can't even remember. But overall I just really enjoy how much Maddex loves being a part of our family. He smiles so much, laughs at us, talks to us and the cats, hugs us. He just makes our lives so much better!
Miss Anything? A big fat juicy burger!
Looking forward to: Watching him grow and learn. It is amazing to see how much he changes each week!

When Oliver had a bad cold Jeremy's dad suggested elevating one end of the crib mattress by putting a folded blanket underneath. Between that and the cool mist vaporizer it made a HUGE difference. Perhaps elevating one end of the mattress could help with the transition and the breathing.
ReplyDeleteUgh... posting from my phone never works right. Anyway, I'm in your court on Maddex saying "kitty." Weeks ago Jeremy SWORE Oliver was signing "dog" for Calle. I couldn't catch him and then one day there it was, "dog." Humble pie for mom and an I-told-you-so moment for dad. People should never underestimate the connection between kids and their animals.
ReplyDelete(Why else would Oliver be so joyful when Calle kisses him on the mouth... yech!)
